300-Pound Inmate Sues Jail Over Food - AOL News (http://news.aol.com/story/_a/300-pound-inmate-sues-jail-over-food/20080428090109990001)

Broderick Lloyd Laswell says he isn't happy that he's down to 308 pounds after eight months in the Benton County jail. He has filed a federal lawsuit complaining the jail doesn't provide inmates with enough food.

According to the suit, Laswell weighed 413 pounds when he was jailed in September. Police say he and a co-defendant fatally beat and stabbed a man, then set his home on fire.

"On several occasions I have started to do some exercising and my vision went blurry and I felt like I was going to pass out," Laswell wrote in his complaint. "About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again."

But Laswell then goes on to complain that he undertakes little vigorous activity.

"If we are in a small pod all day (and) do next to nothing for physical exercise, we should not lose weight," the suit says. "The only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally being starved to death."

The suit also asks that the county be ordered to serve hot meals. The jail has served only cold food for years.

The meals, provided through Aramark Correctional Institution Services, average 3,000 calories a day, jail Capt. Hunter Petray told The Morning News of northwest Arkansas for a story Saturday.

A typical Western diet consists of 2,000 to 3,000 calories a day.

Laswell's suit was filed without a lawyer in U.S. District Court in Fayetteville.

This cracks me up..if 3,000 cals/day has caused this man to loose over 100 pds, I wonder what kind of cal intake would be required to maintain his original 400 pd weight??? Does he REALLY think the jail should provide that much food?? That would cause others to gain ALOT of weight....Although, on a side note, I do think the jail should provide warm meals though......although if that was my dad he stabbed, he could eat dog food the rest of his life for all I'd care, lol

He is utterly redicloious! Who in their right mind would WANT to weigh that much? Its one thing to let go or not care about your weight, but its a whole nother ball of wax when you strive to be that big.

They should throw the dumb ass judge who let this frivolous lawsuit go to trial in the slammer too with Laswell.

What a wonderful world we live in......

I love the fact that taxpayers are supposed to maintain a 415lb man.

I need to move to Canada.

lol, well they are not "supposed" to, thats the whole point...this guy is nuts!

That is what I am saying. He expected the taxpayers to maintain a 5000 cal or so diet and is now suing because of this...

Oh Canada! Our home and native land..........

Whew! This thought also crossed my mind...but i thought I'd be the only one thinking it :leaving: Although I truly would not want to be in jail at all.

Aramark supplies food to our campus, too...

That explains a lot.

And certainly not what he was in jail for.

I couldn't believe the story when I read it on Sky news - most people would be grateful for the weight loss!

I'm not on this guy's side by any stretch, but some people get VERY HUNGRY. I know the feeling, very often I will go crazy if I dont get something to eat. His hormones are very out of wack from all the excess fat (fat is actually akin to a gland that produces hormones that make us hungry) and he's probably feeling like he's starving half the time. I'm not defending him, but this might be where he's coming from, as opposed to having a desire to just eat for the fun of it (that too I'll bet!). Think of yourself for a second. Are you overweight just because you love to eat (mmmmmmmm yummy food) or do you also have a large appetite--meaning you get hunger pangs a lot and need to eat or you'll feel nauseaus or go crazy.

Then again, if you can't do the time then don't do the crime. Anyone remember Baretta from the 70's??

well sure, I see what your saying, I"m sure REALLY IS hungry! BUT how can he expect the gov't to feed him enough to maintain that weight?? The jail system isn't an open kitchen meant to feed anyone anytime they want..AND the taxpayers are paying for this food, I"m sure no one wants to pay more taxes to feed them more.

BTW....I understand that your not disagreeing, your just adding another angle to consider :)

My excess weight has very little to do with hunger, and a lot to do with enjoying eating all the things I shouldn't.

Everyone is different and you're lucky. Hormonal issues, such as leptin (the hormone produced by our fat) and other yet unknown problems can make people very hungry.

Im curious. How many of you are/were over weight because you just love to eat vs always hungry.

Aye! (love to eat food)

if I only ate when I was hungry - i'd weigh 110lbs... I always used to be amused by those weight loss pills that "curb' the appetite - didn't help much -my problem was never eating because i was always hungry...

If it's so bad he should hang himself and end his misery. If he killed someone he doesn't deserve ANY calories per day, they should put his whiny ass in a gas chamber. What F*c*in nerve of him.

Some people will always play the victim no matter what the circumstances are. If it weren't his weight loss, it would be something else to file suit over. I swear there are people in this world who look for reasons to sue someone..it's crazy.
Our inmates are too coddled as it is...they come out with Bachelor's degrees and I can't get mine because I'm too busy working and supporting my family.

That is totally hilarious! of course while being in jail and on controled food he was obviously going to lose weight as they would not be able to provide the amount of calories he needed to maintain his orginal weight! he shouldnt be suing the jail for starving him, he should be thanking them for getting him down from a very dangerous weight!

Yeah, he should be thanking them. They are helping him get a healthier lifestyle. I guess since he can't eat his 10 buckets of fried chicken along with 2 X-Large Papa John's pizzas the jail should change their entire diet.
