I have been to the southwest. Does that count? The single most scary event in my young life happened in Los Cruces, NM.

That counts, however I am curious to know what happend if you care to share. I have only been to Cruces once maybe twice when I was a kid... But a lot of my friends attend school there.

Well I was a pretty big pothead as a youngster. Once when I was about 18 my best freind and I decided to take a "road trip" to the southwest. NM, AZ. Hike in the painted desert, see the grand canyon, all that kinda thing. Anyway we are cruising down the interstate at like 3 am in Los Cruces. All of a sudden we see a bunch of cones on the road and it gradually merges us into 1 lane then forces us to an off ramp to this weight station where they are doing vehicle checks. For immigrants I assume. Anyway the officer comes over to us to check us out. I am sure we were a hell of a site. At this point we had been camping at campgrounds for about 5-6 days already. About 50 ft from where we were parked there is another officer playing around with a canine. We had I would guess around 2 oz. of weed on us. It was for personal use of course but in a lot a places that was enough to be charged with distributing which I am sure is especially frowned upon so close to the border. If that dog would have came over I am sure we would have been going to jail for felony drug possession in a border town jail. Not where a couple of white teenage hillbillies wants to be.
He didnt though. The officer obviously thought we were crazy. Who randomly drives around the desert with no destination or plan, just camping when they get tired? He warned us not to pick up hitchhikers and sent us on our way. We went on to have a great trip. I still wonder how my life would have changed if that dog had came over to the car though.

Eek! Oh I bet your heart was racing! I can only imagine what would have happened... you're right that is pretty scary!
I've been through those checks too before and my heart would even race... mostly because I was by myself...

lol the check to get in and out of Mexico was funny. I am obviously white and American but I guess they have to ask everyone a question. I was nervous anyway because I was 17 and had a bottle of tequila in the trunk (for a friends dad... I swear;) ) and he asked who the president was... I couldn't remember!!! lmao He let us through but they did check the trunk. I had a bottle of tequila and 2 bottles of vanilla and they were all the same size and wrapped in paper bags. They asked what we had and I said vanilla (that stuff is so good to cook with!) and they picked up 2 random bottles and checked them and they just happened to be the vanilla! whew! I don't know what would have happened to us if they had found it but what a relief that fate was on our side that day:D
Born and raised in ABQ but now living in Denver:) Yay Southwest!!
