When I heard "couples" I thought there would be male/female teams and I was glad about this because it finally addresses what I have read as scientific fact (of couse always to be disputed by other science I'm sure) that men lose weight easier and quicker than women. Hence, IMO, why every winner has been a man. But alas, the show will feature varying gendered teams so no doubt one of the teams with one or more men on it will be up there when it comes to the weigh-ins.

I am sure you figured it out, but it is on NBC, not Bravo. I have actually been watching it tonight. I never had before. It is quite interesting so far.
The second weigh-in just started and I think it is funny how everyone is amazed by the water-weight loss the first week. Next week will be another story!
Edit: Oh, yeah. Someone mentioned in another thread about the Austrailian version that someone lost ~35# in one week and they basically did that because before the show everyone is encouraged to gorge themselves.

The reason why men typically loose faster than women is muscle mass. We tend to have more of it.

The reason why men typically loose faster than women is muscle mass. We tend to have more of it.
Among other differences, we also have different hormonal systems, including different leptin levels, the hormone that regulates our appetite and speed of our metabolism. This may be more significant than muscle mass.

I missed it! I was watching the Biggest Loser marathon on Bravo until 8 and then COMPLETELY forgot about the new one being on at 8 - kind of hard to do with them having commercials for it every 10 minutes! Do they repeat it on any station?

I love Biggest Loser Couples already! So far my favorite teams are Orange (Dan and Jackie, the mother and son team) and Pink (Bette-Sue and Ali, the mother and daughter team).
Anybody else think that it's weird that there was a father/daughter team, mother/daughter team and mother/son team but no father/son team?

no they dont replay the biggest loser so you have to watch every tuesday on NBC at 8...... dont worry though it was just the 1 week just watch it next week... if you go to the website they might show a little recap on nbc.com

I got to miss half of it because my only NBC station decided the Rose Bowl was more important than Biggest Loser :/
But at least I got to watch the second half (from the middle of the balloon race onward).
I wonder what Jillian and Bob's big announcement is going to be next week - weather it's just they are teaming up to dole out the work out pain or something else. Anyone know if they are already married? LOL

Yeah unfortunately you know his comments towards the group in that meeting had a profound effect on their decisions. You can just tell by hearing what they said.
what was crazy was the two young camp counselors, you'd think they'd be working their butts off and kicking butt. It was tough to see them struggle so much and make comparisions of themselves vs the rest of the group thinking they should be doing better than they are.
Hopefully they will concentrate on the inner stuff more and worry about each other. Focus is hard to get especially in a situation like that were its all about competition. I'd just hate to see them get sidetracked on the emotional side of things and not make it further.
Them being counselors its important they drop the weight cause they are in the business of helping and supporting others. I'd like to see them do well.

Most reality shows reward the winner with $1,000,000 and many with 500K. $250K is a lot of money but it does seem pretty cheap considering what the other shows do.

I love this show. I watch it every week with a friend online if I can. Or at the very least tape it to watch later in the evening depending on my schedule.
I'm glad that Lynn and Jenni went home. He so didn't want to be there, you could tell. My dad would've been the same way. Scratch that...my dad would've never agreed in the first place! He loves his bar stool and beer buddies too much.

hey...some people disagree and agree... I think that it is heathly...being that they are working out 5 times a day(5 hours) and are eating heathly. They sure aren't posting the big numbers this week. Of course the challenge wasn't helpful...but that one lady just refuses to concede that what she ate may have contributed to her weight gain this week. She figures those little tiny chocolate pieces should have just distributed themselves around her body with no weight loss. *insert eye roll here*

First week is mostly water weight. This week they were mostly right around 1% of body weight a week, which isn't unreasonable as an average, even without access to Jillian and Bob.

200 calories of M&Ms wouldn't make a difference on the scale. (Don't believe me? Weigh yourself, eat 40 grams of M&Ms, and weigh yourself again. If your scale is accurate, you're all of 40g heavier - and even if those M&Ms were converted to fat with 100% efficiency, they'd only add 26g of fat!) Jillian is absolutely right - what she was risking was water retention. And I'm guessing that's what she (and several of the other women) got - but that could be hormones as easily as M&Ms.

Size 15 is a junior's size, meant for people who have no hips, thighs, or waists. If that doesn't describe you, switch over to misses'.
At this very moment, I'm wearing a pair of size 15 jeans, and they fit me snugly. Yesterday I was wearing a pair of size 12 jeans, which are at least one size too big. So it's entirely possible you could actually be a size 10.

I know it's been said here before but I did want to reiterate that she most likely gained due to a few factors (I don't know if she was having her cycle so I can't comment) but the chocolate thing is HUGE! It is just a great way to add retention weight onto your body. Had she probably been in the house the next week, I bet we would have seen over a 5 lbs loss... I am almost sure we will see that with a few of the women (or even men as well).

Changing up the subject a bit. I saw a natural diuretic on Jillian's web site made with distilled water, lemon, cranberry juice and dandelion root tea bags. I made it last night. Easy enough to make... but good lord does it taste nasty. Think dirty feet. EWWWWW. No wonder it makes you lose water weight (she boasts 5 lbs a week, we'll see!) it tastes so nasty it makes you not want to eat or drink at all!

I'm a great big juicy apple!
My boobs used to be a 41...15 lbs ago. But she has a nice hourglass figure.
Even when I lose my middle, I'll still be pretty much a board. My boobs will shrink in proportion with the rest of me.

The size tags usually say 11/12 or 13/14. I guess I just choose to use the smaller number cuz I like it better.
Any size that has the odd numbers is meant for a junior/teenage body. You may want to try women's sizes as you may get a better fit.

Also remember that fit is really relative. It all depends on the LASTS the pattern for the pants was made from. A last is a standard template based on specific measurements. No two lasts are identical and they are changed periodically to reflect current styles. Also, different companies use different lasts. Lee uses a different last than Faded Glory and so on
There is also a difference in fit between individual garments of the same brand depending on variances in seam allowances accounting for the individuals running the machinery in the factories the clothes are constructed at. You can pick up two pairs of Lee jeans, and they likely won't fit EXACTLY alike.
Stacy London and Clinton Kelly say it all the time on "What Not To Wear" - don't take the size on the pants as anything more than an indicator that you are in the right size range. Try things on.

I noticed the only woman to really loose any weight was the pink team mother, all the other women didn't loose like her. From work related experience I know if you get a bunch of women together for an extended period of time they will start cycling their TOM together. My wife says the pink mom is probably past what she calls the "power surge" (hot flash) age.

Bettie-Sue is probably either in or past menapause by now. But I'm hoping the ladies will be able to lose more in the coming weeks. Men lose faster then woman most of the time, although last week was pretty sad for all. I felt for them, I know their pain.

C'mon. Leave Neill alone. Not everyone is physically or mentally equipped to do hours and hours of exercise. I don't think most people could do those long intense workouts.

I don't think Neil is READY to really loose the weight. His heart isn't in it. As far as the hours of intense work out - it's not that bad when you are in a group and doing it. What the BL contestants go through is not so different from Basic Training. Well, I take that back, it's a darn sight better LOL. I still remember pushing up Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, and all the grass and gurilla drills we did, and PT twice a day, and running everywhere and marching ... that was non-stop :p
Tell ya what, I wouldn't mind a fitness Basic Training camp again. There's an amazing synergy that occures in a focused group scenario.

C'mon. Leave Neill alone. Not everyone is physically or mentally equipped to do hours and hours of exercise. I don't think most people could do those long intense workouts.
Though motivationally speaking, Neil is somewhat hurting (at least in the context of the show), the dude IS losing weight..... He may not be making Biggest Loser record breaking weight losses like some do, but I wouldn't mind doing as poorly as he was doing in those weeks.... I could see everyone hurting on him for causing them to work more, but in fact they should be thanking him really. Every extra 5 minutes he cost them of extra reps was 5 minutes closer to their own goals too in the long run.
I have a feeling Neil is going to be shocker at the finale. I think he knows full well how poorly everyone obviously thinks of him and is going to use that as motivation to get in good shape for the final show. He may have not performed for the camera, but I really think he will surprise everyone at the end. I think some people really can never get used to having someone else dictate their goals for them. I used to be one of those people, thinking I could only ever find success by having someone force me to find it. But maybe, just maybe, he will not only do alright, but excel on the outside.......
Mark my words, Neil may not win the eliminated contestants prize, but I think he will put in a very good showing by the end...

Personally I must be a hypocrite, when Neil did it last season (water/gameplay) I was so pissed off. But when the orange team did it, I was ok with it. Mainly because the producers are turning it into a game now (ALL VS ONE, stupid bullshit and personally detracts from the real goals of the show).
Since it is now a game, I don't think the PINK team should be pissed or anyone else for that matter. They all loved being against the YELLOW team and it was ok for them to be on the chopping block like that, but when things backfired and their necks were on the line it was dramatic and worthy of tears a plenty. Kelly was sobbing about how she doesn't know if she can do it at home... well than you DON'T DESERVE it. Plain and simple to me... I know I sound like a dick for judging her but I can only comment on what I saw and heard. I am actually REALLY happy for her that she can do it at home... but please, don't say you can't control willpower and make changes in your life and then blame someone else for ruining your goals.

:seeya:OMGosh, I laughed my head off last week when they kept showing that chunky bald guy in his ju-jitsu (or whatever) outfit! It was hilarious, because they totally played it up, banging the gong, etc. But I must say, he totally rocked the joint, especially running on the balance beam over the pool! I find his relationship with is ex to be the most interesting part of the show, and I really hope they win. His body language says strongly that he is still in love with her, but he comes across as a fella who would be pretty dang hard to live with...
I was sorry to see Pink team go home, but love that their time there actually helped to heal their relationship!
I cannot believe the the PURPLE gals work at a FAT CAMP!!! That is just too much. They don't seem quite as committed to losing, and they may go home next.
I also think GREY is holding back! Those former athletes are a force to be reckoned with!

Wow tonight was pretty harsh - ya think Bob is gunning for Jillian in a personal way? Half of purple is gone now.
I was surprised that Kathy's ex (gad, I can't remember his name) was so stupid as to drop his calories as low as 500 or 600 a day. I hope Jillian beats him upside the head for it. I agree with her, they are all messing up with their intake and it's why their numbers have been so bad.

I just caught up on my Tivoed episodes of BL. I never used to like Jillian but I am really really liking her this season. I mean I'm not into women but shiat she's been looking hot lately LOL.
I am so pissed at Bob for picking all men, except the token woman he got. I almost wonder if this was set up by the producers so they can have this underdog competition thing going on. Damn entertaining though! I was so hoping the girls would win, but I started to realize it just wasn't going to happen. I just wish for once they would have women compete only with women and vice versa. Its a fact that men lose weight quicker and are also better at most athletics (challenges) than women. I'm a strong woman, but come on, nature is nature and they're the bigger and stronger (but dumber he he) sex. And they seem to be able to damn well take weight off like nobody's business with the hormonal systems they have. Rant Over! ha ha
I agree that the relationship on the yellow team is very interesting. I was so disappointed when the ex-H said he missed his girlfriend at home (on the show where they didn't take the letters). I want him and his ex wife to get back together! Dunno why but its so romantic to me.
Biggest shocker, but a real confirmation for those of us around the board who are proponents of eating healthy and are against restrictive calorie cutting, was when the ex-H said he only had 600 calories a day and he put on 3 lbs. Its not always abut motivation, him being highly motivated to the point where he starved himself. And its not always about just cutting and cutting calories, at some point that doesn't work unless you can keep it up like an anorexic (of course after weeks and months of severe restriction you will lose all your fat). But who can keep up the starvation thing for more than a few days or weeks before the body is demanding to be fed properly (and of course goes overboard and right back to old/bad habits).

I dunno, for a man his size to gain 3 pounds after all that working out? It really doesn't jive for me. He should've at least remained status quo. I bet he threw it with some water drinking. This is a game after all. He's in it to win it. I wish Kelly would go. Her voice and all that crying was just so darn irritating to me last night. In the end, they made a good choice. Jenn was just not pulling good numbers.

I think he just didnt eat as much, and when he did, he ate more than usual throwing off his metabolism. You could be right about drinking water though, someone did that in the last show. I cant remember his name, but it worked cause he ended up losing a bunc of weight on the next weigh in.

James - Neil from last season water loaded right before a weigh in and put on something like 17 pounds (or close to it) in order to get the cowboy dude voted off. It was very under handed.
Kelly reminds me a lot of a friend of mine, so I don't feel she is so terribly annoying. I can see why she and Paul did NOT make a good match as a married couple though ;p He needs someone who can tell him to stick it once in a while. I think Kelly was ready to be voted off in order to keep Paul there.
I know that Bob has stacked the deck in his favor, but I really hope that Jillian can pull out an under dog miracle and we see some amazing numbers from the black team in the next few weeks.

I dunno, for a man his size to gain 3 pounds after all that working out? It really doesn't jive for me. He should've at least remained status quo. I bet he threw it with some water drinking. I might have agreed with you at one time...but just a few weeks ago I put on 8.6 pounds in 7 days.....while restricting my calories and working out for at least 2 hours per day.
I got so frustrated with the weight gain that I went on a diet break for one day. I did not work out at all!! I also let myself eat the remainder of the cheeseball in the fridge and the rest of the crackers I had from the Christmas party platter.
My day of breaking my diet stopped the weight gain. It was the first day in 8 that the scale did not go up. It took 2 more weeks for the 8+ pound weight gain to drop off. I'm still juggling those last pound off and on.
My point is that I know my calorie intake and my exercise for the week that I put on 8.6 pounds. I should have lost at least one pound that week. Instead I put on weight.
Sometimes you can put on weight w/o water loading or excessive caloric intake.

I enjoyed the challenge - both Bob and Jillian are in amazing shape - I can't believe how hard they had to push it and how out of breath they were.
I love Bob - other posts remark how tough Jillian had been in prior seasons - but she is a little too emotional for me. Every episode it seems that she is crying. Come on!!!!
I wish the show would spotlight more on foods that the contestants eat - other then Weight Control oatmeal and sugar free gum. Addin in some yummy healthly recipes would be a nice touch.
Overall - I DVR every episode and can't wait to watch. Keeps me motivated and I have to say that I love the Biggest Loser Workout - dvds.

Drinking water doesn't add the pounds, water retention does and that is due to having too much sodium in the body. Had he drank more water, he might have lost the 3 lbs.
How did I gain 4 pounds in one day?
Temporary weight gain is most likely a result of water retention, which can be caused by eating too much sodium. Water is heavy: a gallon weighs 8.34 pounds. In the body, sodium is found in the tissues outside of the blood vessels. If sodium becomes too concentrated, water rushes in to lower the concentration. The result is puffiness, often seen in the fingers and ankles as gravity pushes water to the ground. To eliminate excess sodium and water, reduce dietary salt intake and drink plain water to flush out the system. In women, the hormones of the menstrual cycle can also cause sodium retention. Certain medications can cause water retention as well.

I agree that the in-show commercials are so cheesy! Jillian seems so fake while doing them.
I was using the weight control oatmeal about six months before the show started doing that, and while it has about 20 more calories than other oatmeals it has double the protein and fiber of them as well. Most beneficial to feeling nice and full in the morning with the combo of protein, carbs and fiber.

So Jackie is gone home now - hope her son can keep up with the WL! She looked awesome in the part where they show how the contestants have done at home! Beautiful! I generally really enjoyed her on the show, but I thought it was totally rude and inappropriate to try and force her team mates to "swear on the lives of their children" that they would not vote her off! That is one vow a parent ought not to make, IMHO. So I wasn't too surprised that they gave her the heave ho. And Yay for Bernie for losing such a huge amount this week!

While I liked her and the tactics she used previously to get Black team off, it came back to bite her in the ass. She should have seen it coming. Simple as that. I really thought that she was underhanded in the way that she dealt with most people on the show. And I didn't like the way she would always make snide remarks about people. A good example would be Neil and Amanda.
Was Neil working up to his potential, no. But does that mean she had a right to make fun of him? No. And then to involve her son in the "merry-making" just disgusted me. Just shows how insecure she really was of herself.

Bernie lost the most out of anyone.......13 pounds. Britanny lost the most for the ladies with a 10 pound loss.
On the commercial they were saying something about a Biggest loser 1st and at the weigh in everyone had an astonished look on their faces. The "What?" look if you know what I mean.
I can only imagine that someone tries to throw the game again for some reason.
And Bob has said on numerous times that he hates it when people do that.

The blue team blew the black team out of the water. Jillian read the riot act on Kelly, Paul and Brittany (I think it was Brit) for pushing their callories as low as 500/day. I wish they would have talked more about WHY they need to keep their calories up. They didn't spend nearly enough time on that at all.
Jillian also said they work out 6 hours a day - wow. Boot camp indeed. It's no wonder they drop huge numbers each week.
They had a temptation - chocolate covered caramels - and the prize was that they could swap one person to another team. One of the big guys on the black team won by eating 49 candies.
The challenge for this week was they had to cook for a renowned chef and make his recipes more healthy. Black team won the challenge and got dinner prepared by that famous chef AND they got videos from home.
At the weigh in, Black team weighed in first and put up pretty respectable numbers adding up to about 40 pounds of weight lost between the 6 of them. Blue team had to loose 28 pounds in order to win the weigh in, which they did. In fact, Paul lost 12, 9 of which counted because he gained 3 last week.
When black team was deliberating on who to vote off, Jackie and her son went to the 4 big guys, thinking to get Trent voted off, but her scheming bit her in the butt when the 4 voted her off instead. They were absolutely not sorry about it either. It's easy enough to tell that the son will be the next one voted off that team if they loose another weigh in.
I wonder if one of the big guys throws the next weigh in JUST for that purpose next week and that's why Bob walks out.

Wow...thank you mikitta! {hugs}
I'm wondering why Kelly, Paul & Brit (or whoever) pushed thier calories under 500??? I agree that they don't seem to deal with the "calorie" aspect as near as much as they should. Seems like they just focus on busting ass day in and day out.
And 49 chocolate candies???? OMG! lol
Sheesh.... I can't wait for next week!

Hey everyone! I'm new to this thread, but certainly not new to following the Biggest Loser. I love the show, especially Bob and Jillian, but does anybody else find that Jillian stating that they workout 6 hours a day is a bit hazardous to their health?
As for what you were saying about calories, 500 or less is borderline anorexia. I'm wondering how "healthy" this show is becoming. I used to love this show as a motivation tool, but it' becoming so unpractical to the point that it is unrealistic for anyone to exercise that much in the real world. Also, starvation diets just aren't healthy.
I still love the show, just "food for thought"
I just wish it wasn't getting so "extreme" because it sends mixed messages on healthy weight loss.

When Jillian found out that three of her team were pushing their calories too low, she was NOT happy. I do wish they would spend more time explaining that these folks need to EAT MORE because they work out so much. They do NOT advocate starvation dieting at all. The contestants are supposed to eat. She told Kelly she should be eating at least 1600 calories a day.
The 6 hours a day - that's like army boot camp. When I was in in Basic Training, way back in the mid 1980's, we did an hour of calisthenics in the morning and then again in the evening. After our PT, we always ran for a couple miles. Sometime during the day we did grass and gorilla drills, then throughout the day we marched or ran every where and did push ups till our arms fell off. And we went for around 10 hours a day.
As long as the contestants on BL are EATING ENOUGH to sustain their activity, it's ok. The trainers know where each person's personal medical limit is and how to keep them going without putting them in danger. I am sure a lot of their working out is jogging and walking and doing yoga and swimming, generally low impact stuff. They just are very, very active. They aren't on the machines constantly, like the film editing makes it look like.
No, it's not likely someone in the real world is going to work out that much. But no one in the real world is going to drop 10+ pounds in a week of actual fat either.

Tonight was a pretty good show!! I wasnt expecting Jillians mom to be on there...well it looks like the blue team is falling off!! They need to no get cocky about it & think that they are going to win everything, thats why they are losing.. It was sad to see Trent leave, but his update was really good!! Congrats to that! Well cant wait to see how next week goes since they are going home...dont know..i wish then luck!

I was sad to see Trent go, but with his injury, he was having more and more problems. I would far rather have seen one of the brothers go. Unfortunately Jay got immunity and he's their weakest link.
I never expected Bob to walk out in a huff when his team actually worked as hard as they could with no one playing games to retain weight and influence the weigh in.
I though Paul's session with Jillian's mom was pretty hard core. Man, he went through the bad times with his dad, huh? I really hope he pursues some counseling after the show to process all of that.
I wonder if Black can pull out another win next week. It's going to be interesting to see if ANY one looses any weight going home. I have little faith that Paul has learned what he needs to about eating, but we shall see.

Trent was always such a good guy. I was sad to see him go, too. Mark is such a jerk... I hope he doesn't win it all!
I was surprised to see Bob walk out in a huff. I don't think he should have done that. They all worked hard, and walking out on them makes it seem like he's giving up on them.
Personally, I was really happy to see Black Team pull it off again! But, it doesn't look like many of them are going to do very well when they go home...

I was very sad to see Trent go home. As it seemed he was the only one there for the right reasons. To lose weight and get healthy. The others all seem to be wrapped up in the money.
I agree that I would have rather seen Mark go. I do think that Jay would be an actual good guy if it wasn't for his brother always "showing" him how to act.
So it would seem that the voting off of Jackie last week was just a thing brought on by her being so bossy about who they should vote off. That and Mark's grudge against her. I do believe that Trent probably would have gone home last week if it hadn't been for Mark's grudge against Jackie. Did you see the look on Dan's face when he realized it wasn't going to be him being voted off?
Next week ought to be interesting.

I thought Jackie's "Bossiness" has to do with her being a mom. She probably felt like she was a mother hen to all the boys. I was sad to see Trent go home too, but he did very well while he was there and he needs to get his knee fixed.
I'm routing for the black team, just because there are more women and I route for the underdogs, and I am glad they won, yet again.
I didn't see why Bob got bent out of shape, oh the drama. It is what it is, bounce back next week. It isn't like they aren't trying.

I'm with you and I soooo do not like Mark either. I wish he'd go home soon, but unfortunately he's probably going to be the one to win this thing.
I'm kinda feeling sorry for the girls at this point. They just aren't losing like everyone else. :waving: Yeah, I agree it was a mistake to send Pink home. I loved those gals - they were a riot! Especially the mother.
I hope all of the contestants actually seek out some counseling regarding why they put the weight on in the first place. It was interesting to me that all of the ones interviewed (except Paul) had some kind of connection with divorce as kids. Such a hard time when families break apart.
I have heard it said that "It's not what you're eating - It's what is eating you" and I think there is some real truth to that. Mind you, that box of Ding Dongs ain't gonna help! LOL
Trent seems like a stellar guy. I hope Paul is the big winner, though. At least at this point.

I don't understand why black gave Jay the immunity. With Trent going home - now the brothers have the advantage. One by one they picked apart the teams. I think Trent, Dan, and the other ?football player? were stupid to keep the brothers together, they should have voted off Mark - a taste of their own medicine ( what happened to Jackie).

I was absolutely disappointed in Paul! One for not even trying and two for actually mocking the program that he was participating in.
He didn't even try to stick to his "new way of life". I think that it would not surprise me to learn he gains the weight back and then some before the finale.
And the blue team...........HOLY COW!!!
Man did they make up for the past 2 weeks or what? I thought it was way cool how Jay and Mark were looking out for their kids well being.
That is something that I am currently trying to incorporate into my new lifestyle as well.
Seems to me that they just may be winners in the end 'cuz they see what it is all about.

Paul's behavior was disappointing, but understandable. The man needs to get into some serious counseling to deal with his emotional problems. I truly feel sorry for his new girlfriend, because he's clearly chosen her for her resemblance to Kelly.
Mark's daughter is overweight. She is a chunky kid. I'm glad he and his wife are realizing that eating right is a family affair while their kids are so young because it's going to give them a step up in life. Jay's kids didn't look too bad, but I'm also glad he's taking a stand for their health.
I constantly worry about what my kids eat. My son is compulsive and my daughter doesn't seem to want anything but junk. It's a constant battle to keep them pointed in the right direction and I take that seriously because within a few short years, they won't be caring what I say. They'll be making those decisions for themselves. My son is 10 and my daughter will be 9 in May. I just hope for them that what I am trying to do with better nutrition and daily exercise impacts them positively for the rest of their lives because I don't want them to struggle with food and fitness or just be ignorant of what is good for you like I was for 20 years.

My baby is only 20 months, so she just loves her fruit. Any kind'll do. I'm wondering when that's going to change. I water down her fruit juice so she doesn't develop a sweet tooth. Certainly it wouldn't be but once a year that she would find herself eating those donuts. Poor Whatshisname's son even ran under the table to eat his donut in peace LOL.
I was just flabbergasted at all the soda Paul was drinking. How are you going to waste all those calories on liquids?! Drink some diet soda or better still, water, you're on a WL show! It just showed how he'll never keep it off at home. And did you see his girlfriend hand him that huge plate of wings? What were these people thinking? Obviously the show made them go out to a tempting meal, but with the cameras around you'd think they'd be embarrassed to succumb. I was proud of Bernie, foregoing a cupcake named after him.

It makes you wonder how out of proportion they(the producers) made his eating look. Maybe there was some exercising and healthy eating they didn't show to add drama? lol I love the drama;) It bugs me though that they manipulate the show for ratings. They just gloss over some stuff I think is so important.... like how he lost that weight! hope it doesn't give anyone the wrong impression.... like you will eat chicken wings and drink cokes and still lose weight... that's a slippery slope. It will be fascinating to see him at the finale!
Blancita

It just goes to show that at a certain weight (that being the key of course) you can still eat a fair amount and still lose weight. I wish all the 1200 calorie per day dieters that start on our forum knew that its not necessary to starve to take off weight.
At first I also hoped that Kelly and Paul would get back together. But then when I saw her BF I was like, no way, he's a lot better for her and she's a lot happier with him. She seems really committed to the weight loss too, unlike Paul with his SODA! I mean you cant substitute a cake or wings if that's what you really want (not that its a good idea) but come on, you can just have a darn diet coke if soda's what you're after. That was a total waste of calories.
Notice how if they have a bad week then next week they'll have a good week and vice versa? The body isn't going to shed 14 pounds two weeks in a row, despite their behavior. I think Blue is in trouble next week.

I wonder if having the two on the Blue team weigh in early will backfire on them--meaning that they have an extra day now for the next weigh in. I just don't see the black team members that are left putting up the numbers they need. Of course, I hope they prove me wrong.
It seemed like this whole show focussed on the Blue team at home more than anyone else--those guys are going to do great at home even after the "Ranch" portion.

Was it wrong that i felt bad for that little boy who kept stealing cinnamon rolls. It was a treat and he just wanted one. Suddenly taking them away and throwing them out can only have confused him and taught him that some food is " bad" . The rolls may not have been the most healthy thign but there was a better way to explain it.
I do hate how people keep forgetting that for all his sins Paul still pulled out 5 pounds. He has also shown to be a strong competitor (the bucket rope challenge as well as getting across the pool and getting the little foam blocks) He screwed up, backslid and has had issues but he's human like everyone else. He also just had to reveal some very deeply buried emotional issues.

I truly just could not understand why he would totally pig out when he has worked so hard! He is a really strong competitor when his brain is in the zone, all right.
It sure seems like the WL deck is stacked in favor of the blue team. Those guys are so huge! Except Dan. But I was TOTALLY shocked by how much weight they lost this week! Actually, I have my doubts about how healthy it is to lose 16 pounds in one week...OMGosh, I would be over the moon to lose just 3 lbs in one week! LOL

Interesting interview with former contestent and Lyle McDonald:
*************
A few weeks ago, I made a comment about the tv show the Biggest Loser in the newsletter (for those not familiar with the show, it's a reality show dealing with weight loss that has both an Australian and US version).
In response, a former contestant sent me the following comments and told me that, with a few names removed, I could run it in the newsletter. I'm going to run it almost like an interview with his comments (in bold) followed by any comments I have about it.
I think what he sent is interesting as it points out
1. What can be accomplished in a short period when you put your mind to it
2. How unrealistic some of the changes on the show actually are relative to normal people.
In that vein, here's an interesting article about the show.
BL: I know that obese people are not your target audience but for anyon who cares, we worked out 4 hours per day 6 days per week. That started on day 2. Day 1 we worked out 2.5 hours. That is from sedentary to 2. hours.
We did 1 hour cardio in the morning and 1 in the evening by ourselves and the trainer came in every afternoon for two hours to put us through a circuit resistance based routine for an hour and sometimes her own crazy cardio routine for an hour or we did that third cardio hour on our own also. We never worked out intensely for more than 2 hours at a
time.
My comments: As I'm sure I've mentioned before in the newsletter (and brought up in at least one of my books), research in general has not supported exercise having a humongous impact on bodyweight. However, a lot of studies have used fairly moderate amounts of exercise in this regards. In contrast, large volumes of exercise, and the above can only be considered a 'large volume', especially coming from essentially a sedentary life, can have a fairly large impact.
BL: Our goal was to lose 1lb per day (3500 calories). Our particular trainers philosophy was that she was going to BURN it off you in the gym and if you had a poor day in the gym the VERY first question that was asked was "Did you eat". It had to be pounded into us that we had to eat. It seemed counterintuitive for many of us in a weight loss contest but it proved itself out when a teammate of mine upped his workouts to 6 hours per day and shrank his food to 500 calories per day (on his own) and only lost 3 pounds in 7 days while everyone else averaged 7-10.
My comments: This is an interesting idea as it's something I noted years ago and have commented on previously. The combination of lots of exercise with big caloric deficits tends to work extremely poorly and seem to slow instead of hasten fat loss for some reason. This is part of why I strongly recommended against lots of exercise in the Rapid Fat Loss handbook; the deficit inherent to the diet is already large enough to the point that adding a bunch of training seems to cause more harm than good. I don't know if the issue is simply metabolic slowdown or if there's something else going on (this my current new project now that the protein book is finally done) but I've seen it happen time and time again: excessive caloric deficits plus excessive amounts of exercise seem to do more harm than good. If you are burning a lot of calories through exercise, you have to eat. If you want to cut calories hard, you have to reduce activity.
BL: So that was a 75-25% Cardio to resistance training mix. Man what the body can do when it has the right trainer to push it. This years contestants work out even more (I went back to the show and worked out with them for 3.5 hours on an off camera day and they still had an evening workout to go). Of course your secluded, no phone, no newspapers, no internet - just you and other fatties so what else you going to do except the hated TV stuff, interviews challenges etc.?
My comments: I think that last point is a good one, another reason why some of what can be done on the show is unrealistic to normal people. Between the huge motivation to win (big money, fame) and basically being locked up where all there is to do is exercise, putting in huge amounts of training is much easier. Especially compared to the average person who is dealing with work, home, family, etc. and probably doesn't have 4 hours per day to exercise.
I also think it's interesting that the main focus is on cardio training especially with the recent tendency towards weight training based fat loss approaches. No matter how you cut it, 3 hours of cardio per day burns far far far more calories than 45 minutes of weight training, regardless of the type (or any small calorie burn afterwards).
I'd also add that, for extremly overweight individuals (who typically gain LBM as they get fat), weight training wouldn't seem to have much of a huge benefit. Possibly if it's done with higher reps/circuit style (to burn more calories, deplete muscle glycogen, etc.). But fatter individuals don't usually have to worry so much about muscle loss in the first place, pounding them with low rep heavy work just doesn't make much sense.
Steve
February 22nd, 2008, 10:28 AM
-------------------------------
BL: We typically worked out at 75-90% of our max. heart rate based on the 220 formula WITH our trainer and 65-85% of our max. when on our own. The quality of the 'on our own' workouts usually had to do with external factors like music and fatigue from filming etc. We physically could have done 75-90% on our own but it gets AWFULLY boring!
My comments: One or two studies have found that results are superior with exercise with a trainer; one even found that simply having the trainer stand nearby (without actually doing anything) improved results. This is one very potential benefit of having a regular trainer (or a good training partner), motivation to work harder may mean better and/or faster results.
BL: We cooked all our own food based on the nutrition advice of the trainer (so again individual expertise varies)
Vital stats
Day 1
Resting Heart rate 89-92 bpm
Blood Pressure - 150/90
Pre-diabetic blah blah blah all the other stuff that comes along with being 51% body fat!
AFTER 14 DAYS (equivalent of 2 months in the real world)!!
Resting heart rate 62 bpm
Blood pressure 102/60
Blood sugar normal.
(PS Today 2 years later - it is around the same)
My comments: Frankly this is hard to even believe. Given how much medication is used to treat such things as high blood pressure and insulin resistance, clearly activity and weight loss can have absolutely massive effects. What surprises me the most is the time frame that these changes occurred in.
BL: It is also interesting that the work on the ranch really breaks down to the exact numbers that people see in real life. IE The 'national' average for someone who watches what they eat and works out 6 days per week is approx. 8-10 lb. of weight loss per month(6 days x 4 weeks = 24 hours per month). This same math works out on the ranch 6 days per week x 4 hours per day = 24 hours per WEEK = 8-10 lb. per WEEK. We just condensed a months worth of workouts into a weeks time.
My comments: Frankly, looking at a lot of studies of exercise or diet, many would be thrilled to be getting 8-10 lb/month of weight or fat loss. But I agree generally with the sentiment above, given that attention to diet, a loss of 8-10 lb./month for someone who isn't already very lean is probably attainable. That that amount of weight is compressed into 1/4th the time tends to support that the results on the Biggest Loser are extremely atypical.
BL: For reference - While a TV episode is 7 days in length that is not the case behind the scenes. So some 'weeks' the numbers are larger because some weeks we had 14 days between weigh ins. My season if you lasted until the final day you would be on the ranch 101 days (I got voted off on episode 7 and lost 83 pounds in 62 days) This season is it like 121 days start to finish. And all that gets condensed into a 12-14 weeks show airing schedule.
My comments: This is a bit deceptive on the part of the show in my opinion since it's made to appear that these massive weight losses are occurring every 7 days which clearly they are not.
BL: By the way - Losing and Maintaining are TWO ENTIRELY different problems. My goal now is to keep my cardiovascular system in shape (I love to run) AND build muscle while watching what I eat. So I have had to experiment with tons of exercise routines and programs and play with my diet to no end to learn myself. Oh and I teach on some this stuff so I read a lot.
My comments: This is an exceptionally important point that is often lost. What is done during active weight loss neither has to be nor should it be the same as what's done during weight maintenance. As I point out in both the Rapid Fat Loss handbook and the Guide to Flexible dieting, most research has found that exercise (and quite a bit of it) is actually more important for weight maintenance than loss. Of course, sticking in the long-term with dietary changes is critical as well.
BL: Today - I take in approx. 2500 calories per day and when I am on-point I eat more proteins and fats then carbs. When I 'fall off the wagon' I still stay within my calorie range but I will have more carbs and salt and carbs require 2.7 grams of water for every 1 gram of carbs and salt makes you retain water blah blah blah. People are still amazed that I can drop 10 pounds in a week (I call it 'fake' weight loss) and they don't understand that it comes by simply cutting out the extra carbs and salt while drinking a gallon of water per day and that sheds all the extra water in your body. But I realize that I HAVE to track what I eat or eat the same thing every day which is boring. I teach others what I have learned and I quote some smart guy about those who estimate calories underestimate by 25-50% so keep a food diary/log!
In the interest of full disclosure: We do what boxers and wrestlers do and people gain the weight back after the show because they do not STAY in learning mode.
My comments: Anybody who's played around with lowcarb diets (especially of the cyclical kind) is probably aware of the kinds of water shifts that can occur with such diets. What I think is lost on some people is the sheer magnitude of water that can be gained or lost, especially in larger individuals. The article I linked at the start of the newsletter refers to this and this seasons show had a good example, where one contestant deliberately gained 17 lb. (by drinking 2 gallons of water) so that he could then lose a massive 33 lb. at the next weigh in.

sometimes i wonder if i should even watch the show. i like seeing everyone lose weight but i think they way they too it dangerous and is never going to work long term. i know people personally who watch this and think that they can do it too, at home. i know its their own fault for being so stupid but it still bothers me that this show seems to promote what i think is unhealthy behavior and completely unrealistic results. but thats just my two cents.

Well, if you all didn't notice... but I'm sure you did, he was only actually give one plate of chicken. They just looped it to make it seem like more. And who know's he probably shared it with his girlfriend (whom I think looks alot like his ex wife Kelly). Oooh.. but I was getting upset at his family. They were the only ones they showed who were teasing him with the superdooper extra large chocolate cake. Talk about people who are proud you are losing weight but unknowingly/knowingly help you fail.

Quite a few people share your view.
My stance is ever-changing on the topic. However, I do know the show has gotten more people up off their asses than most anything else the media has put out.
It's shown obese people what hard work and diet manipulation *can* do for them.
Sure, it's not what one should expect in reality. For those who do expect it, they're just stupid. Unless you are running your life like a damn bootcamp and you've got like-minded people around you constantly, plus you have hours of free time to dedicate each and every single day to exercise.... you can't expect these kind of results.
Losing a pound per day is a bit much in my eyes unless you are bordering 600 lbs. But these big bodies that you see can lose quick rates of weight loss without many negative consequences..... so I really don't have an issue with it in terms of health.
I don't like some of the exercise prescriptions I see concerning high impact force coupled with very high body weights.
I've talked about this a lot in the other BL thread.
I just think it was cool to see an inside-perspective from a cool guy, unlike that other tard of a contestent that showed up on this forum looking for business.

This was something I noticed when I first started watching. I couldn't believe the things they were doing at their weight. This week one of the guys was holding dumbells and jumping over the weight bench. I didn't think it was such a great idea for someone of his size. He took a pretty painful looking fall once he really got into it.

I do have to say though I think some people underestimate what they can really do if they put the time in. When I was 240 I would have NEVER thought I could run like some of those people do! Actually I still feel that way:rolleyes: lol but it is amazing to see those big people just kick butt at working out. It really made me aware of how strong the human body is and how it can rise to the challenge if you need it to. I think the show is great inspiration.... even if I am not training bootcamp style:gnorsi: and I like the way they have added little diet tips and training tips!!!
Thanks Steve for the article!:)
