Hey! I saw the weight loss group for teenagers and I thought it would be cool to have one for people in their 20s, since we're all around the same time in our lives!
My name's Lindsay, I'm from Winnipeg, Canada and I'm 23...
Starting Weight: 198.6 (5'10'')
Current Weight: 193.8

Reason for losing: better sex with my hubby, better clothes, being healthier, and looking hot in a bridesmaid dress this summer!
Methods of weight loss: counting calories and excercise, especially swimming.
Lookind forward to bonding with all my fellow 20-somethings on the weight loss journey!

I'm 20, nearly 21. I want to lose weight, so that i can wear whatever clothes i want, like i hate wearing skirts or shorts without tights and wearing anything to bare on my arms. I'm about 140 pounds just now, i want to be roughly 8 and a half stone, which i thinks a good weight cause i'm short and quite small boned.
I want to be able to look in the mirror and like what I see, and to feel as pretty as my skinnier friends.

Hi!
I just turned 25. I am losing weight mostly to feel good about myself, but I like the comments from other people too. Any suggestions about how to get my boyfriend to want to start losing weight without making him feel bad?

I think this is a great idea :)
I'm Erin. I'm 21 years old and am a senior in college (very scary!!). I'm 5'3 117 lbs. I don't really have much weight to lose, but I really want to get in great shape. Pretty much I'd like to lose some body fat, particularly from my legs stomach. I want to be able to wear shorts in public! I can do skirts, but don't do too well with shorts.
I've had a lots of ups and downs with weight issues my entire life which I think all brings me to the point I'm at now. My highest I've actually ever seen the scale say has been 150 lbs when I was in Middle School, although it could have been higher bc it was one of the few random times I ever weighed myself back then. Let's just say middle school was some of the worst years of my life. I started losing weight in HS, but I still had a pretty crappy diet (I never learned about healthy eating from my parents).
Freshman year of college I started really trying to lose weight. It seemed like all the girls were SO skinny and pretty. Well it sort of got out of control from freshman year to the end of sophomore year with some ED issues, etc. Let's just say I was miserable and absolutely hated my body and everything about it. I would cry for hours.
The summer after sophomore year I snapped and ended saying screw it. I ate WHATEVER I wanted all summer and drank A LOT! It was a great summer, but I gained a lot of weight. By the beginning of my junior year of college I weighed 133 which is a big difference from the 112 I weighed at the beginning of my sophomore year. In December I started working out again and really tried to cut back on drinking at parties. By the end of this past summer I weighed 118.4
So now I'm a senior, and I decided that I was going to work on maintaining my 118 weight and being happy. I've never tried to maintain my weight before, I've been trying to lose it for years so it was a really new thing to me. Well I did that pretty successfully for the past 2 months. Then my roommates started talking about how we should go somewhere for spring break this year. Well that was enough to push me into weight loss mode again.
I've been at it for the past 3 weeks or so, and have lost 1.4 lbs (as of a week ago). I weigh myself every Thursday morning, and that is the only time I allow myself to step on a scale. I've been doing really great this week, and am really anxious for Thursday. I don't really have a set goal in mind. I just want to be at a point where I can wear shorts or a bathing suit in front of people and KNOW I look good. I put in a lot of effort at the gym and eat pretty healthy the majority of the time. I want people to be able to look at me and know that I've worked very hard. Also, my major is Health and Wellness with a minor in Exercise Science. I almost feel as if it is part of my future profession to look the part.
Ahhh I just wrote WAY too much! I'm sorry guys...sometimes I just feel like I need to explain myself or people think I'm crazy for wanting to lose weight. I don't really get any support from friends so it's nice to come to a place like this. Plus I LOOOOVE trying to encourage and help other people out. After I graduate, I really want to help people learn to eat healthier, exercise regularly, and just have overall healthier lifestyles.
Ok I'm cutting myself off right now haha...hope to talk to some of you guys! :)

I do not have much time to write this, but this looks like a good thread to start joining and watching.
Stats: Jason, Minnesota, 25, 6'1", 260#, goal of 240# by Feb 29; goal of 200# someday (one thing at a time). I lift weights and do cardio at the gym a few days a week. Of late I have tried to become more of a vegetarian... but I eat meat every once in a while.
I am not really sure of my reasons to lose (maybe that is why I do not have consistent inspiration for myself), but I suppose it is because I am tired of being overweight and want to look/feel more professional as I start climbing the corporate ladder. I hope to really have my career path visible when I turn 30 and still be making my way up. That is a topic for another forum.
Speaking of which, I should get back to work. I needed a break.

Hi again!
I'm 21, need to lose weight for several reasons- my health (family genes filled with diabetes, cholestrol, heart problems, etc). I also want to feel better about myself. Maybe its vanity, but I want to look beautiful like I know I can.
Do you guys find that people in their 20's are as health concious as they should be, or do you find that more of them don't bother with exercise and healthy diets?

Hey! I'm 21, live in Texas. I'm 5'6" and my starting weight is 264, current is 259, and goal is 130.
My reasons for losing weight: to wear clothes I like, health (severe vascular problems run in my immediate family), being able to be more active, and to look sexy!
Methods of weight loss: counting calories and some exercise

No, definitely not health conscious. All the people I know who are my age don't take care of themselves health wise. I don't know any that actually exercise or try to eat right.

i think that people in their 20s go through a lot of changes...going to college, getting new jobs, starting careers, getting married, maybe having kids...it's hard to make your health a priority...
i know that after i started college i was missing dinners at home a lot and my mom stopped making me lunches to bring to school, so i started buying fast food and eating crap...after i got married too and moved out on my own i started gaining weight because i'd eat as much as my hubby eats which is more than i should, and also i don't know how to cook such healthy meals yet as i'm only now learning to cook and all i can ever think of is pasta!
to the girl who wants her boyfriend to lose weight, maybe you should tell him that you're trying to lose weight and that it would help your will power if he were eating healthier too so you wouldn't feel tempted

Hey guys,
I'm 21, 5'7.5" and currently 136 lbs. I was 126 over the past year or so and then smy boyfriend passed away in August, which spurred major emotional eating so between that and going back to school (i'm a senior) I gained a lot of weight. I was up to 142 before really ending all that overeating etc. I work out a lot and eat pretty healthy so it was really just portions that were screwing me up. The weight has come off pretty easy so far but I think the rest will be a bit more difficult. I want to get down to 130, 126 was a bit too low, in retrospect. I'm really just looking forward to being able to look better in my clothes and feel healthier.
As far as knowing health-conscious people in their 20s, I know a lot. My college is a typical private east coast college with way too many pretty skinny girls for its own good. Most of my friends are pretty health-conscious. My friends from home are as well, though not to the same degree.

Maybe you could suggest that the two of you go for a walk (around the block, around a park, in a museum) and you could cook healthy meals with/for him and not call it a diet. Compliment the small victories without being obvious, too. If he loses a few pounds after you have been walking, slip something like "you are looking good!" in there.
My two-cents. No guarantees. :)

Yo~ I'm 23 years old, 5'3", and at the moment I'm weighing in at 185 lbs, my ultimate goal is 125, that would be awsome. I would like to loose at least around 8 lbs before christmas. after that I'll have 10 lbs goals at a time.
My reasons for losing weight: To feel good about myself and get rid of the pains in my knees and back. And to look good of course. :p
Methods of weight loss: some DDR and counting calories

No definitely not. Most of my friends hardly exercise if at all, and only moderately watch their diets for the sole purpose of not gaining weight. A lot of times they will joke with me and tell me I'm "crazy" because I do care about these things. It can be frustrating, but in the end, I know I'm better off than them because I am making a committment to a healthly lifestyle while I'm still young.

i think that the reason they call you crazy etc. is because they feel guilty about not watching their own health...i know that when i was gaining weight i'd poke fun at my mom for reading articles about health foods and i would criticize my friends for not having desserts...i'd say i was doing that because i didn't make healthy choices myself and i wanted it to seem not normal to make healthy choices i guess

Hi all!
I'm 26 years old, and from Texas. I'm 5'9" tall, and I pretty much have always gained weight evenly over my body...as in no one place that bulks up more than others.
I joined this forum not long after I started working out on July 30. When I began, the scale at home said 215. I gained 5 pounds after I began working out, and stuck at 220 for about three weeks. Since then I've consistently lost 1 to 2 pounds a week (more sometimes, less others), and I'm down to 193 as of this morning.
But I decided to lose weight after realizing my family's bad history with health problems (diabetes, heart issues, etc.). In general, I just got tired of being bigger than I felt I SHOULD be. I've already gone from a size 16 to a size 14 in jeans (which is pretty much what I always wear). I work out five days a week, but want to do more, at least one extra weekend day.
My "Ideal Weight," according to what I've found online, is 160-170. So my ultimate goal is 165.

I am 20 yrs old
I started exercising and eating better 3 weeks ago. So far it's actually been quite easy. I have tried to lose weight before but have never found it to be this easy! My whole mind set has changed. It also doesn't hurt that my mom comes with me to my shop to help me then we go straight to the gym after work (we only take one care). We work out together and have a good time.
She also comes with me when I walk the dogs in the evenings (tho I walk them by myself in the mornings)
I am 5'4
Starting weight (November 7, 2007): 169 pounds
Current Weight: Don't know, my weigh in/measurements is next week
Mini Goal: 154 by January 10 ish
2nd Mini goal: 139 by End of March (I think that's what I said, will have to check)
Final Goal: 129 ish by July I think.
will double check my dates and will adjust accordingly.
I want to look good in a Bikini and not feel like the fat friend next to my best friend, where when we go out everyone is staring at her and ignoring me. I want to feel more comfortable and be able to wear whatever I want and feel good
I want to go from a size 14 ish (depending on the make of the pants) to a size 5/6.

Good ideas, the problem is we live 6 hours apart because I'm in school. He has a membership to the gym and mentions that he needs to go, he just doesn't do it. I don't want to say, yeah you do need to, for fear of hurting his feelings, but I think it would be really good for him.

I'm in a similar situation, but kind of the opposite. I'd really like my bf to workout more bc he is SOOO skinny. I love him the way he is, but sometimes it's hard not to wish he put in a little effort and started building some muscle. I've been with him for almost 3 years so it really isn't a major issue, but I just think he'd look sooo much more attractive if he did. I also think people would take him more seriously, and he wouldn't look so young.
Anyway, my advice to you would be to stress how important his health is to you. He is your boyfriend and you obviously care about him so you shouldn't feel bad about wanting him to be more active and healthy. Maybe forward him some articles on the importance of physical activity just to get him thinking a little bit more about it. Frequently, but not every time you talk to him, ask him how his gym membership is going. Talk about how great working out makes you feel, and all the positive benefits you've been getting from it. When you guys are together, try to do something fun and active. If he's competitive, maybe you can get a workout challange going between the 2 of you. Mostly just remain supportive to him. If he is going to start working out on a consistent basis, it is only going to be when he feels he is ready. Sometimes just getting to that point is the hardest part.

i think i know how u feel.. my boyfriend is way too skinny also.. its a real stress for me that he looks skinnier( well.. he is actually skinnier than me..) and younger than me.. some people who doesnt know us easily think of us as siblings.. i hate it when that happens.. i want him to start working out so that he could gain some weight.. but it seems like hes just the way he is.. its not that its a serious problem for our relationship or anything.. but it would be nice if he could gain some weight.. and i will lose some so that we could be a perfect couple :p

In July I weighed 295lbs, so I am slowly losing some weight. I think I'm going to have to kick it up a notch though. For the last several months I have just been cutting back on eating, and doing 4-5 exercise sessions a week for about an 1hour.
My target weight is 190lbs or so. I am doing it for several reasons, but the two main things I can think of are to better my health and that I want to climb a mountain someday.

I am a sophomore in college studying music education, and finals start on Monday. Eek! My goals right now are to get down to 190 by winter break because I am getting surgery pretty much right away and will not be able to exercise for a fairly long time.. so I'll be relying on my eating habits at that point. Look forward to getting to know you all!

Be careful after you've had your surgery. I had knee surgury last February. I couldn't do anything for months beforehand and for even more months afterward. It was just maybe 3 months ago that I was really able to start exercising again, and sometimes it still gives me trouble. I thought I was eating well, but I think I just ate too many calories. Thats when I gained weight. I didn't keep track of anything while I was out, which I should have done, and maybe I would have been able to prevent it. But it sounds like you know what you're doing. I'm just warning you, be careful, because the weight can sneak up on you, and its much harder to get it off than put it on.

aww I know exactly how that feels. I have a very small upper body (although my stomach could be a little smaller), but I have a really big butt and wide hips. I HATE buying jeans. 2 months ago I went to buy a couple pairs before school started, and I spent so much time trying on over 30 pairs. NOTHING. It's really hard for me to buy pants bc I won't buy them unless they fit perfectly which they never do.
Also, that sounds like a pretty reasonable goal which I KNOW you WILL accomplish. You're going to look sooo good on your birthday! :)

What surgery did you have? They said a 4-6 month full recovery. I'll be on crutches the first two to four weeks, in a specialized brace for a couple months after that, then just other recovery.

Ugh I feel the same way. I'm a senior but have another four years of graduate school before I can get a real job. It seems sooo far away! Definitely not looking forward to all the exams in the next few weeks, fitting in adequate time for the gym is not going to be too easy.
sEoYeOn and gymchica - I am definitely with you on the huge hips and butt! Unfortunately my arms and chest lose weight first, so that just accentuates
the pear shape. I so wish target weight loss was a possibility.

Heh. The real world and jobs are not all they are cracked up to be. Enjoy college. You will not know what you have until it is passed.
I am glad I am done with school (for now), but the full year of looking for a real job while continuing to work in retail, followed by a contractor job where I was laid off after five months, then another year before finding a stable job (and then I realized the job sucked) was not the best time in my life. I have settled now and love my job. Enjoy what you have now.

I've got massive bones so i myt have to b skin and bones to b an 8 and i don't fink i want that. i shall c lol!
I have the same problem. I also have a problem with my calves being HUGE. Even when I was 210lbs, they were barely smaller. It's weird, because there really isn't too much fat there. Uggg, I hate my big legs...

Good luck to all those with finals this week!!
I just pulled an all-nighter last night for an exam I had at 7:30 am today. I literally studied all day and night. It sucked, but I think it was worth it. At the very least, I should be happy that I'm done with that class forever!! :)
Now just 3 more finals to get through...

Stats:
Age: 20
Height: 5'6"
Starting Weight: 234
Current Weight: 192
Goal Weight: 135ish, but I'm thinking that's too skinny for me.
I'm a junior in college, but I'm on the five year plan for engineering. Reasons for losing: vanity, health, and statistically pretty people make more money. Wow...that seems pretty shallow, but it's my motivation.
My finals don't start until next week, but it's really going to suck when they do. There are reading days this week for which I have plans to get some serious studying done, but I'll probably end up cramming last minute. It's almost easier losing the weight than it is to get over my awful procrastination habit.

I've been stuck for almost a month now so I set myself a mini goal earlier today. I think my ticker showing me I was almost half way there was discouraging me, so now it's back at the beginning. I'm also going to try and zig-zag my caloric intake to see if I can beat this plateau before the holidays.

It's not too bad this semester. I just switched to a different engineering than the one I was originally majoring in because I just wasn't very good at it, and it's amazing how much more I like school now that the subject matter actually interests me. I'm not looking forward to next semester though. Some of the classes I'd been putting off are all going to hit me at once.

I'm in my first trimester of med. school, also staying up way later than usual, which probably means about midnight. I'm past the days when I stay up till 3 am studying. I need my sleep. I find it helpful to go to sleep for 5 or 6 hours and get up early if I think I need to do more. I had my first exam today. Only 9 more to go. Blah.
I've been struggling with weight loss recently. I was doing really well, then I had about 3 days when I ate a lot. Now I'm kicking myself, of course. Why would I do that? Anyway, I think I'm back on track, or at least on my way. Today was better. Tomorrow will be even better.
Good luck everyone!

i would like to sleep earlier too but i just cant wake up early in the morning.. so i always finish whatever i have to do .. and usually its around 3,4.. :( i've heard that getting a good sleep helps losing weight.. at least 6~8 hrs of sleep is neccessary.. but professors arent helping out.. damn.. :p
i think i'm in the middle of a slump these days... i'm really depressed and gloomy these days.. since i broke up w/my boyfriend just a couple days ago.. i just cant stop eating that one or two cookies after the meal... :cuss: and its so cold that i dont wanna go out to exercise... what am i going to do... :(
two weeks left of school and i'm goin home to my parents..i wanna show them a skinnier me... but the way i'm doing right now.. i'm not too sure what i would look like when i meet them at the airport... i need to at least get back to jumping ropes.. but then i have so much to do for the finals.. eventhough i think i'm just gonna play around and not concentrate on anything until the last minute... its so frustrating....

I dunno what happened with that last post. I tried to quote... didn't work out so well. Anyway...
You must take breaks from studying, right? That's when I go to the gym. I usually go twice a day for 45 minutes or so each time. And bring your notes with you. It's easy to read while you're on a bike, and can be done walking on the treadmill or on the elliptical. Do something, even if its not much. Do what you can.
School is closed for the day. I really needed to take that final today to get it over with to start studying for all my others. I'm not happy about that. I guess I should be happy with the extra time. Ok, back to studying.

I really need to stretch. My cousin is going to give me a ring around 11 to go to the gym. She's pregnant and is terrified of putting any baby weight on that tiny frame of hers. Even pregnant she's still so little it makes me kinda sick. *ahem* ANYway...

I've a large frame as well. Even if I got down that thin, I'd still have these huge hips and chests. With a little more weight on me though, I'd at least still be in proportion. It's just what I'm thinking now though, we'll see how I look once some of this weight comes off.

I'd say it totally depends on your frame and bone structure. I am 5'7.5" but have a pretty small frame so I'm happiest when I'm in the 125-130 range. I'm 135 as of this morning and although I'm within the normal range its still a little heavy for my frame. Some of my friends though, are the same height but because of their frame they look better in the 135-140 range.

Hey everyone! I'm a newbie here and I think this is a great idea for a forum. I'm 21, and a senior in college.
Current weight: 145 (5'6")
Goal weight: 125 (what I weighed when I came to college...I have a pretty small frame)
Sometimes I really have trouble getting motivated. By the time I find time to go to the gym, I'm so tired I just want to sleep. and of course I end up grabbing for the snacks, and even while I'm doing it I know I'm going to regret it! anyone else deal with this?

A little cake every now and then never hurt anybody! :) It becomes a problem when it's a lot of cake very often.
Ahhh 2 finals down...2 more to go. I had one at 7:30 this morning. Didn't go to bed til around 3. I definitely wasn't planning on staying up that late, but studying took much longer than I expected. I woke up this morning and it was like a blizzard outside! Snow everywhere. That was real fun to walk the 25 minutes to class in especially since it was still dark.
Now I'm nice and comfortable in my apt. I have Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures final at 1:30 that I still need to study for. It shouldn't take me very long to study though, I'm just not looking forward to taking it because it is all essay. After those kinds of tests my head and hand hurt from writing so much. They also take forever to complete.
Then I have a work meeting to go to which I KNOW is going to be very stressful and will probably just leave me in a bad mood. After the meeting, I plan on going to the gym and getting a really great work out in! I'm supposed to do weights today, and I'm going to do 30 mins cardio afterward.
After all this is said and done, I have ONE MORE final to study for which is once again at 7:30 tomorrow morning. I really need to make sure I finish studying early bc I really need a good night's sleep. I don't want to worry about skipping a work out because I'm too tired.
Anyway, I weigh myself tomorrow. I'm kind of nervous bc I don't feel like I lost any weight, but I did really well this entire week (and didn't even drink this past weekend at all!). I guess we shall see what happens.

Hey, you can't have birthdays without cake.
I had a takehome final that I should have done last night, but I was so tired, I ended up going to bed at something like 10:30. It's due by five PM today, though, so I'm going to have to bust my butt at some point today and crank it out. It's three 500-750 word mini-essays.
*sigh* I'm SO tired of school. It's stuff like this that's made me decide to go military. Reading and writing are usually my favorite things to do in the world, but at this point I could care less if I ever saw a book or a pencil again!
Luckily, I don't have anything to study for after I turn in my takehome. My next final isn't until Friday, so I'm of course going to wait until the last minute to study for it. :D
I think I need to stop weighing myself every day and just do it on Fridays. Once I start doing it every day, I start doing it several times a day, and then it becomes an OCD thing to me. That can't be healthy. :|
kerich1117
December 5th, 2007, 07:17 AM
Ha I weigh myself every day but only do it when I first wake up, I always weigh more after a full day of meals. I think it helps me because I can immediately see the change depending on whether I behaved the day before or not.
So my first two exams are tomorrow and I'm having such a hard time concentrating. This and the gym in an hour or so are going to be my sources of procrastination. I still have a huge paper and two exams next week. I'm applying to grad school and the additional work from that is killing me.
Alright good luck with all the work, we're almost done!

Hey everyone.
Had a good day so far.just got back from uni. pain!! My big weigh in day tomorrow (1 week) even though I weigh myself everyday lol. Wish me luck.
Seoyeon – it doesn’t matter if you had a little bit of cake. As long as you don’t eat too much. No point refraining from it altogether otherwise you’ll end up binging. That’s what I do anyway. Lol
Gymchica – ure so lucky to have snow. We hardly ever have any in England. And when we do it doesn’t even last. Good luck with the rest of your finals. Just make sure you get enough sleep. That’s the biggest mistake I made. Stayed up all night and slept through the exam (well half asleep). Your big weigh in day tomorrow. Same here!!! Good luck!
Maverick – I weigh myself a hundred times a day aswell. It is like OCD! I never thought about it that way before. Good luck with your finals and takehomes. Last minute studying is the way forward!!!! Hehe
Kerich – I way myself in the morning. I feel the lightest then. It’s really good. Last thing in the day is the worst. But then you feel all better in the morning. Good luck with ure finals and the application.
Jeremy – hey how you doing. WELL DONE with the weight loss. Can’t wait till I can say I lost so many pounds. At the moment it’s just three . Good luck with the rest of your goals.
Take care everyone
Good luck with everything

My mother just sent me a finals care package, aka box of junk food. I'm really fighting eating any of it since I've already gone through and picked out all the chocolate, but it's extremely difficult. I'd just give it away if I didn't know she spent so much money on it. I gave her a list of snacks for next semester to avoid this problem. I think I'll put this one somewhere so it's more difficult for me to go grab things out of it.

i havent even started on my finals yet.... the first one is on monday.. and i have tests everyday for three days in a row.. and then the last one on the next monday.. *sigh* long way to go... :(
its always important to sleep well!! i feel like all the things that i memorized is being arranged and put in order by itself while i'm sleeping.. hehe and no sleep always makes me half asleep during the exam.. which is even worse because i dont usually study that well if i stay up all night.. PLUS!! getting g good night's sleep is important for weight loss.. :p
i went to have a medical examination w/my friends and weighed myself for the first time in like a month or so.. i dont usually weight myself that regularly.. but it was quite a shock when i saw that i've only lost 6 pounds since the beginning of LAST sememster!! hmmmm... long way to go.. but the thing w/me is that my weight doesnt change that much but everybody sees the diffrence.. like i fit into smaller size pants or my old pants fits better or even gets loose.. something like that.. so i'm not too worried about my numbers .. numbers will slide down one day i suppose..

My name is Luke, 21, male. Been overweight basically all my life. In the past few years my weight got out of control without me really knowing it. I stepped on a scale in July and didn't like what I saw to say the least. I vowed that was the heaviest I was ever going to get and have been losing weight since.
Losing weight for my health, confidence, energy and looks. Changed my unhealthy diet around and joined a gym (headed there right now actually). Doing cardio and weight training.
Thanks for reading.

I decided to change earlier in the year when I saw some pictures from a vacation in San Diego. I looked *terrible* compared to where I was last year. (Two of those pics are in my Before pictures in the Before&After forum...the two bottom ones.)
I'm in the same place you are. Weight training, cardio, and (mostly :o) no unhealthy foods...

i went to have a medical examination w/my friends and weighed myself for the first time in like a month or so.. i dont usually weight myself that regularly.. but it was quite a shock when i saw that i've only lost 6 pounds since the beginning of LAST sememster!! hmmmm... long way to go.. but the thing w/me is that my weight doesnt change that much but everybody sees the diffrence.. like i fit into smaller size pants or my old pants fits better or even gets loose.. something like that.. so i'm not too worried about my numbers .. numbers will slide down one day i suppose..
definitely don't worry about the number. I lost 26 pounds over the course of my junior year and I would notice my clothes fitting differently without any change on the scale and then all of a sudden one day I would get on the scale and there would be a dramatic drop. Plus who cares about the number, the smaller size is way more important.
Welcome Luke, keep up the good work.
Everyone else: good luck with the finals...few more weeks!

Wow those are great results!!! You should be proud of yourself :)
I am so happy to say I'm finally done with finals!!! I was really upset last night because I was so tired and my studying took way longer than I expected (I didn't even finish). I thought I was going to be able to go to bed somewhat early but nope. I've only gotten 3 hours of sleep at most the last 2 nights in a row.
I'm proud of my self though because I was VERY productive today although I was running on hardly any sleep. I took my final at 7:30, worked from 8:30-3:30, and then I even went to the gym and did weights AND cardio :)
I also weighed in this morning and my weight didn't change. It was sort of frustrating, but I tried my best to not let it get me down. At least I know now that my weigh in from last week wasn't just a fluke. So in the last month I've lost 4 lbs which is a great pace for me since I don't have much to lose. I can't get upset about that :)
Now I'm about to take a much needed nap, and then I'm going out tonight. I haven't gone out in weeks. Time to celebrate with some drinks :cheers2:

great job for Luke and MysticRealm!!
and i'm so jealous that ur finals over gymchica.. :p i still havent even started on mine yet.. but it'll be all over in a week :)
i'm so down.. and have no will to do anythihng.. hope its just the usual gloomy mood during exam times.. i stayed in my room the WHOLE day today.. was planning finish my two papers before dinner.. but i couldnt concentrate.. so i was doing this and that the whole time.. finished the first one just before dinner.. and only halfway through the reading i'm suppose to read before writing the other essay.. :( hopefully i can finish this before 2 and go to sleep
eventhough i was alone in my room the whole day.. but i think i did a good job on eating nothing else besides my meals.. (or maybe it was because i had nothing else to eat..) but ne ways i ate a calory bar and milk for lunch.. (didnt wake up for breakfast :p) and had two slices of pizza for dinner.. pizza was not the best but i didnt have anything else to eat.. and besides that was the leftover from last week's party so i had to get rid of it ;)
i'm planning to finish rest of the reading and go out to exercise.. need some fresh air lol
hopefully tomorrow goes better than today.. and i'll be happier
i wanna go out to have a nice time too :(

I'm 28, 5.8, and weigh 255. When I was 24 I was 180. Big difference from four years ago. It all started when I moved in with my girlfriend. They say that happens. I guess becuase you end up not worrying about what you look like and you get comfortable with each other. I don't know. It's also part of a medical conditions thats now just being taken care of. Hypothyroidism. they say it runs in the family. My mom has it, my grandmother has it. Thats part of the gain also. It accelerates how much fat grows on your body.
Any how, my weight is causing me a few problems. I have a bunch of size 36 jeans and L shirts that I can't even wear. I'm saving those just incace i fit back into them in a couple of years. I'm also having trouble sleeping at night. That could be due to my medication I'm on, also is due to my weight can. It's hard to breath at night.
How did this take so long to hit me and make me finally realize that I need to take care of the problem?
I pick a good time diet. The holidays. Am I crazy. So much for my grandmothers ham, turkey, and filling. Not only that, but the homemade cookies. Not only my grandmothers but my girlfriends family as well. I just have to disciplin myself, limit myself on my portions. Thats the way to start.
My plan is to cut out the soda, no more soda. Say no to it. I think Morgan Spulock should go on a 30 day soda diet to show us those results. He should drink like 10 cans a day or something like that. Now I wasn't that bad, I averaged usually 3 or 4. Soda, is it worse than cigarettes?
I went to the grocery store and purchased chicken, celery, some stuff for salad, those bags of rice kegs to give the illusion of eating chips. Sunchips are good to for a snack. Alot of fruits and vegetables is a key item I also purchased.
ok...i'm going to end my ramblings now. this is my first time on a forum and had alot on my mind. I thought I'd give it a shot to see what happens.
If anyone has advice it would be appreciated.

oh, and why does Target only have up to a size 40 and make their so called XXLs an actual XL. They have a plus size female section, but what about the guys. It sucks.
I guess it cost them to much money to carry bigger sizes in mens clothes.

Take it easy! Finals is the worst period to diet... We stress, we want food, brain wants glucose, argh... awful! Don't make exercise before studying, it worses the memory capacity, make it at the end of the day. :seeya:

G'day, I'm the Fat Lazy Guy, or FLG for short.
I'm 21 years old, 22 next March. I'm from New Zealand, and it's great being here. I currently weigh 223.5 kgs, which is deep into the 400+ lbs club. It's definitely no fun being this big. I have a lot of "issues" which have been kind of prohibiting me from trying to lose weight, but this week I've just gone for it.
In fact, this week, I've managed to exercise every day, and eat responsibly, and I've ended up losing 3.5 kgs (7.7 lbs). That's my first weight loss in, well, in quite a while.
I'm really doing it all in my blog (link in the sig), but I don't really know a lot of other people my age losing weight, so I thought I'd join this, if it's okay.
Peace.

welcome FLG and mhummel1979!! theres a korean saying that says "starting is halfway done".. so we're all half way done since we've made up our decisions to lose weight ;)
Ianthe - really?? i didnt know that also.. i've always went out to jump ropes in the middle of the study when i was tired.. but since jumping rope is not THAT heavy exercise i think it wouldnt be much problem to study for another couple of hours afterwards.. :p
ne ways.. whys is it that u get extra hungry and sleepy during exam times?? is it mental thing?? or is it physical.. i got hungry even before 5 today.. but i ate a sandwich for morning (which i usually dont.. i usually just skip morning :( ) and i've also had lunch.. so normally i shouldnt be hungry until 6.. despite the hunger i was so sleepy that i went straight to bed after came back from skool... and just woke up to finish my papers and start studying for next exam..
is this mental thing?? or is this physical..

thanks for the saying, i will keep that in mind. i think people get that way over the stress of the exam. I ate a sh..load during the week of one of my soc and math finals. I binged on fast food and pizza. It helped me think better while studying.

sEoYeOn - I'd imagine its more of a mental thing. You're exhausted because you probably are staying up studying and not getting as much to sleep. Plus studying and stress wear a person out. When we are low on energy, our body wants more (aka calories) hence the hunger. Not to mention I know I am in my room a lot more during this time so I think my body just wants to eat out of boredom.

I think determination and confidence are key. Have you looked at any of the pictures in the "Befores and Afters" section? They are great motivation! Also check out the "stickies" in most of the section. They have really great info everyone trying to lose weight should know. Good luck to you, and I hope we hear from you through out your entire weight loss journey :)
mhummel- Welcome :) Soda is a great thing to cut out from your diet and will definitely make a difference. Make sure you are eating enough food everyday (but not too much!), getting protein in every meal, and exercising consistently, and you will reach your goals. Also I know the holiday season will be hard, but we will all be here to support each other during this crazy time! We can all make it through the holidays :)
slavke- Good luck. I'm excited to see your progress :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway for me I think the eating more during finals thing has to do with boredom. Eating is taking a break from the studying, and I'm always looking for an excuse to take a break from studying. I actually did really well during finals week with eating, it was AFTER finals week was over that I went a little crazy. Back on track now though! :)

damn, i gave into the craving of fast food yesterday. damn you burger king and your Italian chicken sandwiches. Had to get the meal didn't I?. Second day of my diet and I gave in so easily. Anyone else give in so easily that early.

Just don't think of it as a diet and it'll be easier to stick to. Think of it as watching what you eat.
Personally, I feel like it's harder to cheat if I force myself to write everything I eat down. Then I feel REALLY guilty if I eat something I know I'm better off not sticking in my mouth, and it cuts temptation back by at least 70% for me. I'll opt for the healthier option just so I don't have to write something "bad" down on my list.
(Did you know 48.2% of statistics are made up on the spot? ;) )

It happens...to everyone. Like Maverick said, it's easier if you don't think of it as a "diet". It's pretty much a new lifestyle you're going to have to develop in order to lose weight and KEEP it off. Eating BK once in awhile IS okay. As long as you do your best to keep all your other meals healthy, consistently exercise, and not make a HABIT out of getting fast food, you'll be fine.
It gets easier though. At least for me it did. I was practically raised on fast food. We'd get it all the time when I was little, and there were always cookies, candy, chips, etc. in our house. As I got older and realized THAT was the reason I was getting fat, I made a concious effort not to eat SO much junk/fastfood. After a while, I pretty much stopped craving it. I still think it tastes amazing (usually), but I never usually want it so bad that I have to go out and buy. Plus I'm poor, and I've realized it's cheaper to go to the grocery store. I still have it every now and then though, but there is a BIG difference bt having it a a couple times a month (at absolute most for me) and having it almost every day!!
Oh yeah...one thing I also do is go on the websites and look at all the calories, etc of all the food. Some of the numbers are crazy! It helps me plan out what to get though, and realize how eating some of the foods are totally not worth the calories that come along with it. Eliminating mayonaise from things helps a lot too!

if you really want to eat fast food sometimes than picking one day of the week for some junk food is not all that bad. This is only if you can control your self and not go next day and eat fast food again. I try not to eat it at all because I kind of fall for the good taste so easy and it makes it harder for me to stop. My control is much better now since I have been on a healthy diet for over 2 months now. There are some snacks out there that aren't REALLY all that bad for healthy eating. One good example is pretzels, only bad thing about them is sodium. Avoiding bad food completely is really good if you are just starting off, but later on you can have some when you got everything under control.

Hey guys!
I was going to enter this post in my diary, but I can't seem to find it for some reason. Anyway, I'm just wondering what to do about this problem. I am still losing weight, or I'm losing weight again- it had tapered off for a while, but my stomach(love handles especially) seems to be getting bigger. I do lots of cardio and some resistance training. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. They've started hanging out over the tops of some of my tighter pants. Ewwww. Please help me.

For me, I think it was the thought that I'd have to wait ages before I could have any again. Which is really the wrong kind of mentality to have. Like others said, it helps to not consider it a diet. What helps me is to not think about food in terms of "when can I have this again?" It's more like "if I want it, I can have it, but it's better for me not to," if you know what I mean.

well you seem to have a really normal bmi so I wouldn't worry about loosing any more weight. Anything under 18bmi is considered skinny. If you got some loose ends to your waist area try doing crunches, front back and sides.

Ok, thanks slavke. My abs are still covered by a small layer of fat though. Doesn't that mean I should still be trying to lose that through cardio?
well offcourse. That is why you need to concentrate working out that area more than any other. Waist is the most common area where fat starts to grow or show, so increasing amount of crunches in the workout should tighten that area. If its only small amount of loose fat I wouldn't worry too much unless you want to become a model or something, or look like one :)
I have a friend who looks fit, and he is got a crazy 6 pack but had some fat on his hips area. It was really a small amount and I just couldn't believe how much he was stressing over it. He used to do insane amount of crunches to get rid of it.

I disagree. No matter how many crunches you do, it's not going to make any difference if there is still fat covering the area. It might "tighten" it underneath, but it will still look pretty much the same from the outside. You won't be able to see the results until you shed the fat.
The only way to lose the fat is through cardio and eating under maintenance (weight training helps too!). What kind of things do you do for cardio? Have you ever tried HIIT?
Also are these bigger love handles a recent appearance (the last day or so) or have you steadily noticed them increasing?
You could just be retaining water or MAYBE you are losing weight in your hip area first which is making your love handles look bigger, but they are still the same size? Fat is generally lost in certain places first so maybe you just have to be patient and eventually they will start shrinking!

Yes, the love handles are a recent development. They look fine in the morning, but over the course of the day tend to look and feel a lot bigger. For cardio, I alternate between running and biking, and sometimes the elliptical. I'm still losing weight!

I say don't sweat the love handles for now. Wait till you get to your goal, and then take it from there.

Sorry if this question's already been asked, but what does everyone use for motivation, to keep them going? Is it one specific thing, or are there lots of things? One thing for me is all these old clothes I used to be able to wear. I went through them today, and it gave me a bit of a boost I needed.

I know I'm about three months late but, I'd like to join the group :)
My name is Josephine but, everyone calls me Joey. I'm 26 years old. My start weight was 199. I'm now down to 160. My goal weight is 125 and I'm confident that I will get there without any problems.
I wanted to lose weight for various reasons. My health, my appearance, my confidence and so that clothes shopping could stop making me feel so awful.

To answer your question about motivation........
I guess I get my motivation from just thinking how much healthier I'll feel and how much better I will look. I'm also taking part in a 'Biggest Loser' competition at my gym which is a good way to keep myself in check over the holiday season. I have to say though that this journey hasn't been as much of a struggle for me as I thought it would be. I don't crave often, I enjoy working out and eating healthy, so it's not misery 24/7, ya know?
I do love getting my fat clothes out and putting them on and feeling amused and proud of myself for coming s far.
I also keep a picture of myself at 120 pounds on the fridge (I was once a skinny girl) and a fat picture right next to it.
My boyfriend is also a source of motivation which is a massive hep!

Welcome Joey!
Fat Lazy Guy - (ha i feel strange addressing you by that) - My motivation is that I'm away at school and know that any weight changes are pretty obvious when I come home because people haven't seen me in a few months. The worst is going home knowing that people can tell you've put on 10 pounds, but so nice when people are surprised by what you've lost. I also spent a lot of money on clothes before this semester started and they just don't look as nice with the extra 5-10 pounds. Also, my friends and I are big picture takers. Seeing the improvement as I lose weight is huge motivation to continue. Lastly, I'm one of those weigh yourself everyday type people. It is rewarding to see that after a day of healthy eating and exercise, the scale goes down, even if its just .2 or something like that.
Sorry for the novel. Back to studying...done tomorrow!

it's so inspiring and helpful hearing your guys' stories, especially that you're my age...i've been having so much trouble lately with my diet...i gained back the few pounds that i lost and i'm feeling so down on myself i don't even wanna leave the house...yesterday i worked out for the first time since exams started so i'm proud of myself for that, but halfway through i thought i was gonna be sick...i'm sick right now and i almost threw up yesterday...after the workout i had to lie in bed for 2 hours before i felt like i could even sit up...but the weird thing was i was hoping i would throw up just so i could lost those pounds...disgusting right?
i'm trying to get back on track but it's so hard!

Hey everyone! I'd like to join if I can :)
My name is Britta, and I am 22. I am currenly 251:eek: and i want to ultimately get back down to 140ish, but right now my goal is 60 lbs :)
I am not new to the forum, but due to some things happening recently, I took some time off from eating well and exercising (and checking in here often) and I actually gained about 10 lbs! So here I am, starting again :) I am excited though, and I can't wait to start making progress.
I am excited to meet everyone here and become friends.

I agree with FLG...I wouldn't worry about them too much right now. There is no way you are actually gaining fat there so you might just have to wait it out.
If you haven't already tried HIIT though, you might want to give it a try. It's pretty hardcore, but is GREAT for getting rid of fat. Even better, you don't have to spend as much time in the gym! I just did a session after work today :)

I definitely agree with the clothes thing. It's a great feeling when things fit again that didn't before. Another thing that keeps me going is the feeling after I work out or have a great day eating. Also just keeping in mind that time really does go fast. It might seem like a long time when you're trying to lose weight, but as long as you are consistent, the day you reach your goal will be "today" before you know it. It's hard to explain. Sometimes I don't even know where my motivation comes from.
Joey and Britta- Welcome to the best group ever. I can't wait to hear about your progress! :)
Linzee- awww you are definitely not the first person to go through those things. It is really hard to get back on track, but once you do, you will feel SOOO much better. Just take it easy while you're sick, try to eat as healthy as possible, and when you feel better, start exercising again. Once you get going, you'll be fine. And don't forget that we are here for you if you need some motivation or support. You can do this! We all can! :)

thanks gymchica! tomorrow we're having friends over for dinner so it'll be hard not to overeat becaue my friend is bringing dessert and she eats like 5 cookies and CONSTANTLY freaking asks if you want more...i'll do my best to control my portions...i don't even like sweets that much but she's so annoying with like making sure you like the dessert and whatever that you feel like you're stabbing her in the heart if you don't have more UGH! lol she's a bad influence...and worst of all she's super skinny haha

Great answers about motivation everyone!
Linzee - I'm having friends around tonight, and I'm cooking up some really "good" stuff (good as in packed full of calories :D). But like you, I'm just going to try to keep my portions under control. Good luck to the both of us!
Oh, and welcome to Joey and Britta :)
In my news, I've lost another 3.5 kgs, making a total of 7 kgs, or 15.4 lbs in two weeks. but I'm counting from when I was 225, so that's actually a loss of 5 kgs, or 11 lbs. Needless to say, I'm pretty chuffed :D

Oh gosh all those dinner parties are so hard. I'm fine with eating (usually) at school but when I go home we actually have a stocked pantry so its pretty dangerous. I've been pretty motivated lately because I'm only 2.5 lbs away from my mini goal (or final one I'm not sure) so hopefully that will keep me from going to crazy.
Linzee - isn't it typical that the skinniest ones are the ones who can eat anything. My roommate is 5'3" and hasn't broken 100 pounds. Shes always the one bringing the worst foods into the apartment. Genetics just aren't fair.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone :)
Today was a real motivator for me. I'm currently competing in 'The Biggest Loser' competition at my gym in the individual category and I found out at my weigh in today that I'm in the lead so far (final weigh in is in Jan). I'm stoked! I heard that I'm way ahead of everyone besides one other person who is only one pound away from catching up with me so that will really help put a fire cracker up my butt :P I'm pretty competitive but, in a friendly way....not that sore loser type.
I have to toot my own horn a wee bit here.......I feel Ive earned it.
I'm crossing my fingers that I'll be in the 150's tomorrow.

The final weigh in is on Jan 8th.
As of today I'm in the 150's! I'm so pumped. It's been a looooooong time since I was in my 150's. Man, this feels good.
Btw, do any of you take a yoga or pilates class? I was wondering what one would better suit me......any recommendations?

Way to go Joey! That competition sounds really cool. What do you get if (WHEN!) you win??? And I also don't do yoga or pilates so I can't really help you. I am interested in both of them though so I'd like some people's opinions as well!
Good luck tonight Linzee with your friends! I definitely understand how it can be hard. Just last night I went over my friend's house and he was having people over. I ended up having 3 beers which I really wish I hadn't, but it's hard when people keep asking you if you want one. I did my best to use moderation though, and I didn't even eat anything afterwards wh
