View Full Version : Reputation System

Here is a brief summary of our reputation system....

in the blue bar just above each post (where the post time and report SPAM icon is), there is an icon that looks like a scale ... you click on that to add reputation. I believe the little green squares just below that is the actual reputation..

Here is the definition of the reputation scores if you guys want to have fun and i will change them in the admin side:

-999999 User is infamous around these parts
-50 User can only hope to improve
-10 User has a little shameless behaviour in the past
0 User is an unknown quantity at this point
10 User is on a distinguished road
50 User will become famous soon enough
150 User has a spectacular aura about
250 User is a jewel in the rough
350 User is just really nice
450 User is a glorious beacon of light
550 User is a name known to all
650 User is a splendid one to behold
1000 User has much to be proud of
1500 User has a brilliant future
2000 User has a reputation beyond repute

As recommended by me, I think we should refer to it as the motivation meter, where you reward someone for doing something good today.

Somehow I don't think I'll be getting very good marks with this one:( I *think* I am nice though...:(

How do you figure out the person's reputation though? By the number of squares the person has?

question on the reputation system... it seems to prevent you from giving the same person reputation points (no matter how deserved) one after the other -but I can't quite seem to figure out how many times between reputation points you can give a person reputation points again... (how many times can I use the word reputation in a single post?)

Bascially before i can give person A rep points again - how many people do i have to give them to?

Thanks. I have started doing that. But I still can't find out what the different colored lights mean (what color means what) and I can't find them in my User CP even though I have points.
Do you mean diff colours of the blocks, next to the rep people have given you?

On other forums I have used there has only been three colours -red means you have been given negative rep, green means you've been given positive rep. If you get a grey block it means somebody has tried to give you rep but they themselves dont have any... therefore have no "rep power". If somebody has no rep power they cant have any influence over yours, and their contribution wont do anything to your rep. (So the more reputation people have, the more influence they have over others.)

Hope that makes sense.

misti

Thanks, Sprite. Yes I was referring to the blocks. Hopefully it will make more sense as we go along. :)

but i just talk a lot -- it's not like i say anything worth repping :)

my biggest frustration with it - and what i've asked to be looked at for change is youcan't give consecutive reputations to a person... in fact you have to give it to at least 10 others before you can give it back to the original person... so some people's (see Steve) reputations should be a lot higher because he says reputation inducing things.

I don't think that is it. I only have like 4 people who have ever repped me. I have helped countless people. I don't take it as any disrespect.... repping is just not a big thing on this forum, for one reason or another. I think most don't even know it exists.

Most other forums I chat on, and there are quite a few, don't allow consecutive repping, which I find stupid too.

maleficent
February 22nd, 2007, 02:08 PM
Just a reminder - reputation points are currently anonymous - except to admins and moderators - if you are giving someone props you might want to include the reason why and also who you are so they can see your props were appreciated.

maleficent

the only way to give reputation points is to clickon the little scale at the top of every post that isn't yours... and either approve or disprove the message and it's helpful to say why.

AllCdnBoy

i think i've opened it up a bit more so that you can see who left you comments (but you have the option to be anonymous, if you like) ... also, you are not required to give as many reps to others before you can give to the same user again ... feel free to give me rep for doing this for you :D ... if you don't, i'll just artificially inflate it anyway ;)

oh, and to be clear. For every 10 points of rep you have, you have 1 point of rep power. So, if you had 100 rep points, every time you gave someone rep, you'd give them 10 (except mods and above ... we start a bit higher).

Right now, we have 5 people 25 and above with newbride02 leading the way with 33 and a rep power of 7. Woot!

i mis-interpreted one of the options: "Can Hide Reputation from Others" ... i thought that meant that when you give someone rep points that you could do it anonymous ... what i think it means is that you can choose to not allow other people to see your own rep.

Sounds like we need more people involved in repping. Also it would be nice if you didnt have to spread the rep before re-repping. Some people take a lot of time to write good posts, and its hard to show them appreciation with rep.

Korrie
March 4th, 2007, 06:37 AM
what is re-rep?

maleficent
March 4th, 2007, 06:40 AM
giving reputation back to the same person for a different post - prior to the change you had to give it t 20 different people before going back to the same person -now i think it's 5

and reputation can be given for more than just advice given -- it can also be given for support recieved, common sense approach to something, or the like... if the post was of value to you -for whatever reason -that's good enough for reputation

tonymcclellan

tonymcclellan
March 4th, 2007, 04:33 PM
Your green bar will grow and grow. I think as your rep grows, when you give points out, the receiver will get more than 1 and so on.

So if you have 100 rep points, you may be able to give someone 5 points on one rep. If you have the basic 10, then your rep is probably only worth 1 point.

Is rep power (eg 8 or 16) related to the green boxes?

Do they come from the same place? I see there are now two sets of scales on each post. Do they add different types of reputation?

I ask because I can see that some people have rep power of 7 and 2 green boxes and another has rep power 7 and 1 green box, or even (as with AllCdnBoy), have rep power 10 and 1 box?

maleficent
March 25th, 2007, 07:58 PM
the green boxes are related to yur reputation recieved -which int urn bumps up your rep power - the more rep you get -the higher your rep power (which alsl includes total points)
the scale on the top near the report post function and the scale near the user's avatar are the same button and do the samething.

I dont understand the whole reputation thing.

I mean, Ive seen people with a lot less posts than me, but their reputation points are very high.
I know it must have something to do with the quality of the posts, not quantity, BUT I tend to write very long posts..

still.hurting
August 11th, 2007, 06:18 AM
not anymore :)

then what does the number mean?

tonymcclellan
August 11th, 2007, 12:40 PM
The rep power you have is how many rep points you apply to someone when you rep them. For instance, if you rep me, my reputation points will increase 46 points. If I rep you, you will increase 58 points.

As you accrue reputation points, this affects the green bar. The levels of reputation should be on the first page of this post.

felici

Do you know why it's possible for two people to have the same rep power and different numbers of green boxes?

the green bars are all about what you get...

I understood mal to mean that the number is affected not only by how much reputation you have been given, but by how many posts you have made. The green bars are affected only by the amount of reputation points you have been given.

If the people who give you reputation points have a high number themselves, then your reputation will go up by a higher amount than if you are repped by someone who has a lower number.

Also some people are quick to give rep and others use it rarely or never.
When I first joined here, people at this board were tending not to use it, and so I didn't rep anyone at all for a long time, even after some people had started using it. For that reason, and for other reasons, I have often read posts that I was most impressed by but did not rep. I see that others who used the system for a while now say they've stopped. I don't think anyone should feel that their rep level indicates that other people do not value their posts.

Brit - I'd think my head would be bigger. For how smart I am, my brain has to be ginormous, right? So how does my average-sized head fit all that brain in there.

That is what I want to know?

:p

Totally kidding btw.

Mal - Thanks :)

I often sit and ponder this question late at night.

I'm using Firefox and Windows XP and I get the same message.

And I reckon that smilie looks like throwing up too, but there is a note attached to it that says it is "drooling". It must be drooling for something unhealthy and getting confused about what expression it should have on its face.

I agree Steve, Rep equals love ! haha. People with less points generally feel less important, and like their best advice isn't worthy of a good reputation. haha. Okay, so maybe Im exaggerating, but it's easier to say rep points don't mean anything when you have 9823475983453 ! haha. You're all a bunch of interesting people. :) I love this place ! haha.

If someone says something that has value to you.. then you'd give reputation...

Your reputation is built by your post count - and by people giving you reputation - meaning something you said had value to them...

basically you build your reputation by participating inthe community...

If you click on "User CP" in the blue bar you can see who has given you rep recently and there may be a message from them.
